Dr. Irene Fiege and Frank Hansen present the second update of ifmos study for passenger and freight traffic in Germany, which is the only, regularly updated study of its kind, covering all modes of transport. The current study builds on the Institute’s tradition of providing long-term future forecasts in the area of mobility. However, in times of economic crisis and escalating public deficits, resource shortages and climate change, but also of highly dynamic emerging markets, any prediction of future developments is fraught with much more uncertainty. Based on the assessments and visions of more than 80 experts from business, industry and academia, three very different scenarios for the future (mobility) development in Germany have therefore been developed.

This is a core finding of the new ifmo study "East-West Freight Traffics 2030“. Because of its foreign trade and its geographical position within the enlarged EU, Germany plays a key role in this development. But what will be the traffic consequences of this development? Which goods will be transported where, using which transport modes? What will the be the future challenges of these developments for Germany? To answer these questions, the Institute for Mobility Research (ifmo) initiated and commissioned a study on “East-West Freight Traffics 2030” from ProgTrans AG. The first of its kind, the study offers detailed findings about the development of freight traffic between Western and Eastern Europe. It provides a retrospective analysis of traffic flows and development forecasts for the year 2030.

On behalf of this anniversary we invited to a dialog on the future of mobility with high ranking participants in the German Museum of Technology in Berlin.
The future challenges concerning mobility as well as the significance of this topic for the economy and for society were viewed from different perspectives. In the morning representatives from business and politics discussed how challenges can be mastered and opportunities used.

Institutions, that successfully master competition, frequently pose those questions. A successfully approved and frequently applied method for answering those questions is benchmarking. The EU member states have in part very different ways of supplying transport infrastructure despite the increasing influence from Brussels.
Thus, differences in the performance of infrastructure are very likely. It is also good to look at those. The aim is to learn from the best. This is why the Institute for Mobility Research (ifmo) commissioned the Institute of Transport Economics at the University of Münster (IVM) and the KCW GmbH to conduct the study “Transport Infrastructure Benchmarking Europe”, which was finally presented at dbb forum berlin.
